Saeco 00354 Aroma Espresso Machine, Stainless Steel

Poor Product Longevity, (What's this?) I purchased this machine based on some of these reviews and my friend had a Saeco machine but different model that she liked. My machine failed 2 months after the warranty was up (14 months). The element in the steaming unit failed making the unit unusable. I was not a heavy user of the machine, one latte per day. The cost to fix the machine was almost the same as what I paid for the unit brand new. I would try looking for a more durable machine. I agree with the comments about the design of the steaming wand being awkward, however when the machine was working the lattes it made were great.
Phillps Customer Care, (What's this?)
Too Bad...I had high hopes., (What's this?) I have had the Aroma for one week now...used it twice with no problems. On the third use, the machine broke. The pump does not come on to make steam...which according to Saeco is NOT normal. I liked the shots it made...good crema and flavor.
Saeco 00354 Aroma Espresso Machine, (What's this?) I purchased 2 different brands before this one & had to return them. I'm very pleased with my new Saeco machine. I've had it for over 3 weeks & I use it every day. What I like is the ease to operate, the water tank is large & you don't need a special container to use the frothier. And I love the fact that so far every espresso has had a thick golden color crema & the milk froths perfectly. It was a great buy at a discounted price $200.00, love it. Thank you.
Tastes like Italy, (What's this?) I bought this espresso machine a year ago. I spent time in Italy and I was looking for a no-gimmicks, quality coffee maker that would make coffee the way it was in Treiste. This machine has met my highest expectations, it is fast, easy to use, easy to clean and only as noisy as any other machine. It makes a delicious cup of espresso with a wonderfully thick crema.
OK for the price, but it has it's limitations, I had a slightly older version of this machine for many years. It is a solid reliable machine, but if you like to drink straight shots, it has some pretty severe limitations.

1. The boiler is very small, so the temperature drops during the shot, making it difficult to pull a truly tasty shot.

2. The portafilter has a back-pressure device which is supposed to help creme production regardless of grind or tamp. You can probably make crema with kitty litter using this, but it just doesn't taste that good. If you have this device, a non-pressurized portafilter used to be available from Saeco, you may want to check with them.

3. The portafilter is not a standard size, so finding a tamper can be difficult.

If you make mostly milk drinks, it's not a bad machine, because you can cover up some of the inadequacies with milk. It's also a pretty solid machine for the price, and not a bad entry level machine, but if you take your espresso seriously, save yourself the inevitable upgrade, and go for a larger machine right off the bat.
For the money, hard to beat, (What's this?) The machine has performed well for me the past several months that I have owned it. Although in many ways it looks and feels like somebody's industrial arts project, it feels much sturdier than anything else available in this price range. The steel is a nice touch and makes it look like a high-end unit (even though when you use it it does feel that like that high school project I mentioned earlier).

The result is also quite good. It makes the real deal with crema. The heating plate is silly, IMHO. It would take way too long with the unit powered up to make a noticeable difference in the cups' temperature. Just turn the unit on, wait about 30 seconds for it to be ready to pull shots, and pull a shot with no coffee into your cup. Set the cup aside and put your espresso ground in the hopper (which is now heated and more effective, I am told), discard the hot water in your cup, and you are ready to pull your shots. No need to make things complicated here.

I do have one question though. There is a plastic tray with a piece of wood in the center that appears to serve as a separator. What on Earth is that for?!?! I can't figure out what the purpose of that thing is and Saeco didn't extend the courtesy of replaying to my email when I asked them what it was for (the reason I will likely not buy another Saeco product).
Works Great. Pleases the picky., (What's this?) This is the second espresso machine I bought for my boyfriend online. The first was a disaster and had to go back. But I did NOT buy it through Amazon and there was a struggle with the distributor and the manufacturer about where I should send it and how/when I'd get credit. It took over four months to resolve. So, I was a little jaded this time.

My boyfriend only wanted a certain type of "real" espresso machine. Not the kind that just blows hot air in your drink. There were many other factors and specification he was particular about and I don't even remember them now. This one has the pump, etc... I used to think this was to snobby but, after tasting the difference and have to agree. There's a major difference between flavored coffees, a steam machine and real espresso in a cafe Americana or mocha. Anyway, it arrived quickly and was easy to set up.

The finish is very nice and has maintained it's appearance all this time.
Christmas present..., Excellent device, though the instructions are a bit confusing at first. They are forgiven once you figure out how to use it. It makes very good espresso and cappuccino for a fraction of the price you'll pay at the major coffeehouse places. Even with the highest of high-end coffees from Whole Foods that we like, grinding it there in the store at the espresso grind, it still is about $.18 per cup. That's a lot better than Starbucks. Two hints in using the machine: Put enough water in the reservoir to run water through the filter-handle once to make sure that the water and the filter-handle is heated up before you add coffee into the filter-handle. That way, it will ensure that you get hot espresso every time. Also, when using the steamer, get a kitchen cloth (like a drying cloth) and let the steam blow into that first before frothing the milk. The machine has the tendency to spit a bit of water when you first open the valve. Other than that, it does a fine job.
Shots aren't strong enough, I have a Nouva Simonelli Mac Cups I use at work, which is wonderful. This machine is 10% of the price, but for me the money was wasted. The shots aren't strong enough and while the milk does foam, it doesn't get hot. I actually prefer coffee out of my stove top Italian coffee maker with half & half.
