perfect kettle, I'm gonna blather on and on about a tea kettle, so stop reading here if you have a life.
So far this kettle is the best I've used. I don't buy plastic kettles because I don't like the idea of hot water against plastic. I've had all sorts of cool stove top metal kettles. All of them broke or else I burnt them up, which is a danger when stove top kettles are used by easily distracted people. Then I started using an old revereware pan. It was great but water evaporated fast and it took a long time.
But this. It's just the best system. You put the water in, push the button and it heats very fast. The paddle flips up and yer done. Can't get simpler. Perfect for making tea, which I drink a lot of.
Look at the distribution of reviews. People either love this or hate it. Seems like there are some quality control or design issues. I'm a bit of a complainer.
Fantastic!, (What's this?) My wife bought one over 3 years ago when she moved here. She uses it every day, at least once a day if not more. Her original one still worked great, but started to develop some rust around the lid edge. We just replaced it with the same model, and it too works great. The water boils so fast and is great. very sturdy, and doesn't look too bad sitting on the counter as she still uses it every morning, and sometimes in the evening as well. I use it for heating water for our smoker.
Excellent kettle for tea!, I've had this kettle for 3 years now, and it has been a fantastic kettle. I will replace it with another when it finally wears out.
Boil me over!, I have had this kettle for over a year and it is still going strong. Water boils quickly and stays hot for a while. I have not found the switch to be flimsy, it only needs a slight touch to press it down. The handle design is great, no fear of burning hands and very ergonomic.
Why make the only moving part out of cheap plastic???, We've used this kettle every day several times a day. We drink a lot of tea and regularly use it to heat water to boiling faster than on the stove, like for pasta, etc. We only heated water in it. It is easy to clean. It is a well made kettle in all respects except one: the plastic on/off switch. After about two years it broke and we've disposed of the whole kettle because there is no way to repair it. Looking at the broken piece, though, the brittle plastic switch is a lever, and is only about 1/8" x 1/8" in cross section and about 1.5 inches in length (this is the end you can't see inside the kettle, the other end of the fat tab that is the visible part of the switch). I believe the switch broke just from fatigue due to regular use.
This kettle is a workhorse - I love it, I've had this kettle for almost a year now and it works wonderfully. It is in my office and I use it almost everyday. I heat water to make iced tea all summer and hot tea when it gets cold.
I chose this particular kettle because the inside, where the water gets hot is metal--I did not want chemicals from plastic leaching into my water. I looked at other metal kettles and many of them were just too expensive. I was concerned that this one might burn out quickly because it was so affordable, but to my delight it is going strong.
It's good looking, narrow enough to not take up too much surface space, but big enough to make a whole thermos of tea. I love it.
Not a star, a good supernumerary., (What's this?) Just received this item so these are observations from first day of use.
-Works nicely though a bit louder than our last kettle.
An ok product., I've had my teapot for about a year. I do like how fast it heats up water. Mine still works just fine but leaks like a seive. I keep mine on a folded dishtowel to collect the leaking water. It started to leak around the plastic water level area first (within about a month)and now is leaking around the base. Would I buy this product again, probably not. The kettle gets very hot so is a burn issue if you have younger children or a clutz like me in the house. I just make sure it isn't plugged in when not in use.
PIECE OF CRAP, DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT. Bought this in July 2008, and just stopped working after one year. Returned it to HB for service and they replaced it promptly. But the "stainless steel" has rusted and now (Sept 2011)is starting to leak. It is going in the trash.
Dangerous, I used this at work (in the winter only maybe once or twice a day) for about 3-4 years and when it worked, it was good. But many times the contacts in the base that connect to the kettle to heat the water had to be pried up with a paper clip (while unplugged of course) as they were down too far for the kettle to make contact. Now today it stopped working again so I adjusted the contacts again and it wouldn't work... I finally decided to open the base (also, while unplugged)to see what was going on and found that one of the wires was completely broken and another one was corroded, there was a bit of melted plastic around the wires as well.
This is dangerous and should not be used. There was absolutely no evidence that there was a problem with corrosion or split wires in the base until I took it apart, which most people won't do, so they will either think it just stopped working or it may start a fire or something.
1.7-liter kettle with powerful 1,500-watt heating element for rapid boiling.Cord-free kettle rotates 360 degrees, easily removes from base.Drip-free spout; anti-scale mesh filter.Convenient water level window; 2-year warranty.Auto shutoff with boil-dry protection for safety. This electric kettle heats up to 1.7 liters of water for coffee, tea, or instant soup without requiring the use of a stove. The round plastic base plugs into any standard outlet and gets water boiling in no time with its 1,500 watts of power. When water has boiled, a safety mechanism turns the unit off and prevents the kettle from boiling dry. For easy lifting and serving, the kettle rotates 360 degrees on the base and travels cord-free from counter to table for pouring. While the kettle's brushed stainless-steel exterior gets very hot during boiling, the plastic handle and knob on the removable lid safeguard against burns by staying cool. A drip-free spout keeps water from splashing and scalding and an anti-scale mesh filter traps lime and calcium particles (found in hard water) before they end up in a teacup. A clear water-level window conveniently shows how much water is left in the kettle. For long-term performance, the kettle's heating element is concealed, which keeps mineral deposits to a minimum and makes cleaning easier. Hamilton Beach warrants this product for two years from the date of purchase.
