Awesome., How did I get by without this? Received as a Christmas gift and have used it almost everyday. I love it.
Love it, (What's this?) I did a lot of research on the types of kettles that were available. I settled on the Breville because of the number of the reviews.
My use of it is about 2-3 times a day. I am pleased with the looks and the performance. So far no problems. Didn't have
any smell after using it for the first time.
Breville pros and cons, I am ready to jettison my second Breville electric kettle. First one lasted just over a year until the spring loaded turn off mechanism failed. The second one now has rusty stains in bottom of kettle. Tried to clean out with cleansers and special sponge but the metal appears to have corroded. And again this is just about a year and half of usage. Granted it is used multiple times a day and has been a work horse. Now I'm looking for alternative, maybe glass, but the glass options offered by Amazon and the reviews are not encouraging to change to that material due to various problems. I've bought a couple of Braun kettles over the years and have been satisfied with them but they are higher priced and are good for only a couple of years as well. I can only conclude that I'm asking too much by wanting these type of kettles to last 5 years or more.
It DOES have plastic in the kettle, (What's this?) I ordered the kettle as I thought it wouldn't have any plastic in the kettle - many mentioned that it doesn't have plastic. In fact, it DOES have plastic in the kettle holding the mesh. To avoid contact to the plastic, water level should be less than 50% of the whole kettle. Anyway, hot water will poured through the mesh making contacts to plastic. Also the water level indicator has two rubber holes upper and lower, and the level window looks like plastic too. Please take a look at the photos I noted for your information. I can say it has less plastic than others, but it is not accurate to say it doesn't have plastic.
SUPERKETTLE, (What's this?) no metallic taste, quickly boils the water, is lit up with a soft blue glow when it's boiling.
for people with at least half a working brain, because the outside of the METAL kettle does get hot when the water's heated up, so pick it up by the rubberized handle (which has no smell to it. overall an odorless, tasteless kettle). Same modus operandus as a frying pan, treat accordingly.
Needs a re-design, (What's this?) Like some other reviewers have found - this kettle's heating connection wears out. I purchased my Ikon corless first kettle about 3 years ago and it gave out after about 18 months. Hoping that it was a random defect I purhased another one just over a year ago. That one also failed in the same way and now does not turn on.
Bullet-proof and dependable, I bought this for our office break room about 2 years ago from Costco. It has held up to a lot of use. It still boils water ad doesn't show any signs of wearing out. A workhorse for us.
Do not buy this kettle!!, I purchased the Breville kettle after owning kettles for years. This was the worst one I've ever owned. The auto shut off doesn't shut the kettle off when it should and steam shoots up on my cabinets for several minutes before turning off. The cabinets get so wet, I have to wipe the moisture off every time. The kettle also rusted on the bottom and sides within two months of use. The really bad thing was that Breville's customer service was horrible and basically said "too bad" and these items were not reason enough for an exchange!! I since purchased the Cuisanart PerfecTemp kettle and it works perfectly.
so many imperfections from a company that brags about its thoughtful and scientific design process, We've just bought the Breville Ikon kettle model SK500XL, after much research in stores and online sources and on Amazon reviews, because we've liked their quality and it seems attractive and comfortable to us. But it does have a number of imperfections, almost all of which we were aware of, but which seem especially strange for a company that brags about its thoughtful and scientific design process:
The plug is really a klunker. It's almost three inches long, not counting the length of the prongs, and, when plugged in, there's also some cord protruding, as it's stiff and doesn't curve aside well. This can keep the kettle out from the wall, using up valuable counter space, and certainly looks unattractive. That is more of an issue with their toasters and countertop ovens (we own their toaster -- we've been through this issue before), which are much bigger and wider, but seems totally unnecessary.
Two ways to solve the problem: you can buy a short (6 foot), heavy-duty ("appliance") extension cord with a flat-to-the-wall or outlet plug; plug the kettle into that cord, and then drape the whole business up close to the wall, behind the appliances. Or you can cut the kettle cord and the extension cord and splice them together, to make a shorter cord with a less-protruding plug. This will also give you some choice of what color cord and plug you have showing, instead of the black one on the kettle. You might also just shorten the cord and put on a new, flat plug, if you can find one. (Of course, you need to know what you're doing and use components with appropriate electrical capacity.)
Breville is horrified about this. Says it voids the warranty.
Breville SK500XL Kettle, (What's this?) Product was received in two days time (great). Kettle is fast and and seems to be very well made. I highly recomend this product.

Equipped with a 1500-watt immersed heating element, this electric kettle quickly brings up to 1-2/3 liters of water to a rolling boil. To use, simply fill the kettle using the LED-illuminated water-level indicator to gauge how much, return it to its power base, and flip the switch to the "on" position. In about two minutes, hot water will be ready for anything from tea, instant coffee, and hot cocoa to instant soup or oatmeal. The kettle lifts off its power base for graceful serving without the hassle of a cord and can be returned at any angle. Other highlights include a cushion-controlled lid that opens with the press of a button, a viewing window in the lid, a "ready" bell indicator, a removable scale filter, a soft-grip open-style handle, and convenient cord storage. For safety, the kettle automatically shuts off when water reaches a full boil, and its boil-dry protection won't allow the unit to operate without water inside. Housed in premium-quality brushed stainless steel, the kettle measures 8-3/4 by 6 by 9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
